Borelli, Giovanni Alfonso (1608–1679) Italian, astronomer, physicist, and physiologist. After making contributions to astronomy, including the proposal that comets travel along elliptical paths, he turned his knowledge of physics to the working of the living body and successfully explained muscle action on mechanical principles.
