Dumas, Jean Baptiste André (1800-1884)
French organic chemist who discovered that chlorine could substitute for hydrogen in hydrocarbons and was thus led to propose his "law of substitution" (1834) which revolutionized the theory of organic chemistry. From 1868 he was secretary of the Academy of Sciences.
