    hypothesis
    1. In science, a statement of a possible explanation for some natural phenomenon. A hypothesis is tested by drawing conclusions from it; if observation and experimentation show a conclusion to be false, the hypothesis must be false.

    2. In symbolic logic, a hypothesis is the first part of an implication (with the second part being known as the predicate).

    3. In general mathematical usage, "hypothesis" is roughly synonymous with "conjecture."
