polarimetry The measurement of optical activity or, in general, the state of polarization of a beam of electromagnetic radiation. Polarimetry is performed with a polarimeter or polariscope, and is used in chemical analysis (notably for measuring sugar concentrations), to study molecular configurations, and to study the strain in materials showing double refraction.
