sulfur oxides A general term used to describe the oxides of sulfur – pungent, colorless gases formed primarily by the combustion of fossil fuels. Sulfur oxides (SOx), which are considered major air pollutants, may damage the respiratory tract as well as vegetation. They include sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide.
