water treatment

Removal of undesirable substances from a water supply. Unpleasant tastes and odors are removed by aeration. Bacteria are removed by the addition of chlorine (the taste of chlorine is then removed with sodium sulfate). Hardness is reduced with lime or by using zeolite as a water softener. Other organic and mineral matter is removed with alum. Fluoride is added to the water supply of many communities to reduce dental caries.
