An archipelago is a group or chain of islands clustered together in a sea or ocean. Archipelagos may occur in isolation in bodies of water or, alternatively, close to large land masses. Most commonly, archipelagos are volcanic in origin, forming along island arcs that are produced by subduction zones or hotspots. However, they may also be the result of erosion, deposition, or land elevation.
