Bayliss, William Maddock (1860–1924)
William Bayliss was an English physiologist who, in collaboration with Ernest Henry Starling (1866–1927), introduced the term hormone to describe substances which, when secreted from one part of the body, have a specific effect on another. In 1902 they discovered secretin, one of the first hormones to be identified. Bayliss also introduced the saline injection for cases of surgical shock during World War I.
