Ernst Chain was a German-born British biochemist who helped develop penicillin for clinical use. For this he shared with Howard Florey and Alexander Fleming the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Chain also studied spreading factor, an enzyme that aids the dispersal of fluids in tissue.
