Chalk cliffs on the south coast of England.

A cliff is a geological formation consisting of a steep slope, sometimes of exposed rock. Cliffs can be nearly vertical or even overhanging. They may result from the exposure of rock strata due to geological faults (see escarpment) or, as in the case of shore-line cliffs, they may be caused by water and weather erosion.
