Creosote is a distillation product of coal tar or wood tar. Coal-tar creosote is a mixture of hydrocarbons, phenols (see also cresol), and other compounds, used to preserve wood used outdoors, and often applied under pressure. Wood creosote is an oily mixture of phenols formerly used as an antiseptic and food preservative.
