John Dunlop was a Scottish inventor and pioneer of the pneumatic tire. He was a veterinary surgeon in Belfast until, in 1888, he re-invented the pneumatic tire (previously patented in 1846 by Robert Thompson (1822–1873) but undeveloped). His invention replaced solid tires.
