Dementia is the loss of ability to reason, as distinct from amnesia. One of the commonest forms is Alzheimer's disease, which is a degenerative condition characterized by memory loss and progressive mental impairment. Sometimes seen in middle-age, Alzheimer's becomes increasingly common with advancing age. Many factors have been implicated, but the precise cause is unknown.
