Diapause is a time break in the development of an insect. During diapause, growth stops and metabolism slows right down. It occurs because of interruptions in an innate rhythm brought about by unfavorable changes in the environment, possibly because of seasonal changes in climate. In this way, the developing insect survives until conditions improve. See also biological clock.
