Oil sands is loose sand or sandstone containing viscous oil. Depending on the properties of oil to sand, oil sands may occur in asphalt lakes, such as those in Trinidad, or bituminous sands, such as the Athabaska tar sands (Alberta, Canada). Despite extraction problems, they are a potentially important source of oil.
