Phenolphthalein, C₂₀H₁₄O₄, is an organic compound prepared by a reaction between phenol and phthalic anhydride in the presence of sulfuric acid. It is used as a chemical indicator (colorless in acid solutions, red-pink in alkalis), in laxatives, and in dyes.
