'Piedmont' describes the foot of a mountain or a place where glaciers merge. The term is used of areas near mountains, such as the Piedmont (Italian, Piedmonte) region in northern Italy or the Piedmont Plateau to the east of the Appalachian Mountains in the United States. A piedmont glacier is formed when two or more glaciers flow from their valleys onto a plain and merge with their neighbors.
