Strawberry plant, showing stolon and adventitious roots.

A stolon is a modified, horizontal, underground or aerial stem, growing from the basal node of a plant. Aerial stolons, or runners, may be slender, as in the case of strawberry plants, or stiff and arching, such as brambles. The stolon produces a new plant at its tip, which puts out adventitious roots (roots that arise from nodes on the stem) to anchor itself. Underground stolons are characteristic of white potato plants. See also tuber.
