In biochemistry, a substrate is a substance upon which an enzyme or other catalyst acts in a biochemical reaction. In biology, a substrate is a nutrient medium used to grow microorganisms, or the surface on which a sessile organism (such as a limpet) lives and grows. In electronics, a substrate is a single crystal or semiconductor used as a basis for making integrated circuits or transistors.
