A mummy is a corpse embalmed, particularly in ancient Egypt, in order to ensure its preservation for a protracted period after death. The earliest known attempts artificially to preserve bodies were about 2600 BC, though many bodies from earlier times were naturally preserved through the desiccating effect of the sand in which they were buried.
