Runes are characters of a pre-Christian writing system used by the Teutonic tribes of northern Europe from as early as the 3rd century BC to as late as the 10th century AD, and sometimes after. The three distinctive types are Early, Anglo-Saxon, and Scandinavian. The Runic alphabet is sometimes known as futhork for its first six characters.
