The Aeolian mode is a medieval mode whose half- and whole-tone pattern is that of playing A to A on the white keys of the piano. The Aeolian mode was the predecessor of the diatonic natural minor scale. It has the same step pattern (tone–semitone–tone–tone–semitone–tone–tone) and therefore the same sound.
This mode has a dark and sad quality to it.
