Amplitude is the instantaneous magnitude of an oscillating quantity such as sound pressure. The peak amplitude is the maximum value. The variation of amplitude over time is known as the envelope of the sound. The amplitude of sound is measured in decibels (dB). Amplitude should not to be confused with loudness, which refers to the human perception of sound.
