Attenuation is the reduction in magnitude of a physical quantity such as sound, either by electronic means (e.g. a fader, attenuator, or potentiometer on a mixer, or the volume control adjustment of an amplifier), or by a physical barrier, including various absorptive materials (see acoustic absorption). Attenuation is usually measured in decibels.
