belting

belting

Originally a term applied to female voices only, belting is a style of singing in which the larynx is held high and the vocal folds are tight for longer, with the chest register being pushed beyond its normal comfort level. The sounds coming from this position are forward, loud, and driving but not nasal. Most 'belters' can carry it fairly comfortably up to around B flat in the middle of the staff. Although the original terminology didn't include men, male singers can also belt.
