Ledger lines.
Use of 8va.
Ledger lines are short lines written above or below the stave (or staff) for notes pitched outside the stave.
To prevent too many ledger lines being used, the sign 8 or 8va (Italian ottova = 'octave') is written above or below the music followed by a dotted or continuous line. The sign stops when a bracket occurs at the end.
