Aiken, Howard (1900–1973)
American mathematician who did pioneering work in the development of computers. When Aiken was working for IBM in 1939 he designed an electromechanical automatic calculating machine. By 1944 he and his associates had built the Mark 1 Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, one of the first programmable computers. The input medium was punched cards or punched paper tape.
